Band or DJ for Your Wedding? How to Decide
Music is the thing guests remember most about a reception, so it makes sense that couples spend time on this decision. Both a band and a DJ can give you a great night. The right choice depends on the kind of party you want, your venue and how much of the night you want one person to run.
Yes, we are a DJ company. Here is our honest take anyway.
What a band does best
Nothing feels quite like live musicians on stage. A great band brings visual energy, and some styles of music, like big band or a string quartet, simply sound best live.
A show to watch as well as dance to
A strong fit for jazz, swing and classic standards
A memorable moment for a ceremony or cocktail hour
What a DJ does best
A DJ can play the original version of any song your guests know, from your parents’ first dance song to whatever is on the radio this week. That range matters when three generations share one dance floor.
Every song exactly the way guests know it
No set breaks, so the dance floor never stops
Instant changes when a song is not landing
A smaller footprint and less power than a full band
The MC matters as much as the music
Someone has to run the night: introductions, toasts, the cake cutting and every cue in between. With a band, that is often the lead singer between songs. With us, every package includes a DJ/MC and an assistant, so one person runs the mic while the other watches the room and keeps the timeline moving.
Think about your venue
Bands need stage space, more power and a longer setup. Some venues also have sound limits that are easier to manage with a DJ, since the volume can be set exactly. Ask your venue what they allow before you fall in love with either option.
You do not have to choose just one
Many of our couples get both. A guitarist or string players for the ceremony and cocktail hour, then a DJ for the reception. Live musicians can plug right into our mixer, and for acoustic instruments that need their own microphones, we offer musician mics.
Questions to ask either one
Can we hear or see you at a real event?
Who will run the mic, and how do you handle announcements?
What happens during breaks?
Do you bring backup equipment?
Do you carry liability insurance for our venue?
The bottom line
Pick the option that fits your crowd, your room and the night you picture. If that is a packed dance floor with every song your guests love, a great DJ/MC is hard to beat.
